Dodoma. At least 30 primary schools in Tarime municipality have a shortage of 625 classrooms and 2,823 desks.

Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) Mr Josephat Kandege yesterday told the Parliament that eight secondary schools in the municipality were also experiencing a shortage of 133 classrooms.

He revealed the shortage when responding to a question from Ms Esther Matiko (Tarime Urban-Chadema).

In her question, Ms Matiko raised a concern over a serious shortage of classrooms and other key school services in her constituency.

“Since the fifth-phase government started implementing a free education scheme, there has been a serious shortage of classroom and other key education facilities due to a sharp increase in the number of student’s enrolment in most primary schools. In Tarime we also face this problem, what steps is the government taking to overcome the problem? she asked.

Mr Kandege said during the 2017/18 fiscal year, the government set aside Sh119 million to support construction of at least 16 new classrooms, 19 latrine pits and procurement of 154 desks for Tarime districts.

He added that the government has also set aside Sh172 million for the construction of 22 new classrooms and 72 latrine pits in the municipality.
