Tanzania prepares itself to ratify biological weapons treaty

What you need to know:

Dodoma. The government has prepared a draft on the ratification of the Biological Weapons Convention.

Defence and National Service minister Hussein Mwinyi said the draft would pass through legal procedures and probably brought to the National Assembly for approval and ratification in September to restrict the use of poisonous weapons.

Tanzania is among a few countries which have not ratified the convention. Other countries include conflict-hit Syria, Somalia, Republic of Central Africa, Haiti and Egypt.

“The challenges posed by different threats like terrorism have stressed the need for ratifying the convention," said Dr Mwinyi.

He was responding to a question by Mr Jasson Rweikiza (Bukoba Rural -- CCM) who wanted to know why Tanzania had not ratified the convention and be perceived in the group conflict-hit countries.
