Traders arrested for Sh24m fake cosmetics

Fake products are flooding the Tanzanian cosmetics market and can be found on the streets, at shopping outlets and in pharmacies.

Sumbawanga. Fake beauty products worth Sh24 million have been seized recently by the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) officials in collaboration with the police.

TFDA zonal manager Rodney Alananga confirmed that 17 traders were arrested during the operation. In addition to the arrests TFDA has closed down their shops and fined them.

He urged wananchi to avoid buying counterfeit goods. “Traders must inspect the goods to check expiry dates as well as the ingredients used,” said Mr Alananga.
