Dar es Salaam. In-form Temeke had little mercy on Rukwa yesterday as they trounced them 94-16 in a one-sided match of the Taifa Cup netball championship at the National Stadium.

Goal shooter (GS) Mwanaidi Hassan and goal attacker (GA) Materina Mhagama were a real thorn in the flesh of Rukwa defenders, scoring points almost at will to give Temeke a 25-3 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter, the Temeke girls started where they had left off, commanding the proceedings with swift but accurate passes to the delight of their supporters. It came as no surprise when they took a 46-7 first half lead.

Sensing the danger of losing the match by a big margin, Rukwa resorted to long passes in the third quarter.

They seemed destined to overcome the deficit as they briefly managed put their opponents at bay in the opening minutes.

However, their efforts could not stop the well-drilled and fast-moving Temeke from taking the last two quarters 68-9, 94-16.

In yesterday’s other match, Katavi defied the odds to stun fancied Ilala 54-16 at the same venue.

Led by Irene Elias (GS) and Ndigwako William (GA), Katavi won the first two quarters 9-4, 24-9 in the thrilling encounter.

Earlier, Kinondoni survived a scare before registering a 46-28 win over Shinyanga.

It was Shinyanga who made a bright start in the match. They took a 5-4 lead at one point before losing steam to enable their opponents to take a slim 9-8 first quarter lead.

Inspired by the lead, Kinondoni never relaxed in the second quarter. They took the next two quarters 22-15, 35-21.

Kinondoni’s Hadija Msafiri (GS) was frank in her assessment of the game, saying they were forced to apply all weapons at their disposal to contain the young but talented Shinyanga girls.

Her Shinyanga counterpart, Janeth William blamed the defeat on inexperience. The championship continues today with five matches on the menu. Ilala take on Tabora and Morogoro go head-to-head with Kinondoni, while Shinyanga confront Tanga.

The day will also see Katavi lock horns with Rukwa and Temeke face Tabora. Tanzania Netball Association (Chaneta) chairperson Anna Kibira has appealed to companies, individuals and well-wishers for financial support.
