Yanga flex muscles in transfer market: Mudathir renews contract with Yanga

Mudathir Yahya.

What you need to know:

  • Mudathir, who joined Yanga on January 3, 2023, has been a creative engine in the squad’s attacking setup, and his renewal ensures continuity and experience at the heart of the Jangwani midfield.

Dar es Salaam. Mainland Premier League heavyweights Young Africans SC (Yanga) have continued to strengthen their squad locking down key midfield general Mudathir Yahya with a two-year contract extension.

Mudathir joins two top-tier signings — Mohamed Doumbia and Balla Moussa Conté — in a move that signals serious continental ambitions.

The long-serving Zanzibar-born midfielder Mudathir, whose previous contract had expired, put pen to paper following his return from Taifa Stars’ training camp in Ismailia, Egypt.

Yanga confirmed the news via their social media channels, celebrating the retention of one of their most trusted attacking midfielders.

Mudathir, who joined Yanga on January 3, 2023, has been a creative engine in the squad’s attacking setup, and his renewal ensures continuity and experience at the heart of the Jangwani midfield.

But that was just the beginning

Yanga, not content with merely retaining talent, have gone all out to reinforce their midfield artillery by snapping up two international aces,  Mohamed Doumbia of Côte d'Ivoire and Balla Moussa Conté from Guinea.

Conté seal steals headlines from rivals

Perhaps the most talked-about move is the capture of Balla Moussa Conté, a former CS Sfaxien star who was on the radar of bitter rivals Simba SC. The Jangwani-based outfit acted swiftly, securing the Guinean on a three-year deal amid strong competition from East African clubs.

Conté’s arrival is both strategic and symbolic. Known for his commanding presence, tactical awareness, and ball-winning skills, he is expected to fill the void left by Ugandan powerhouse Khalid Aucho, who opted not to renew his contract and is reportedly heading to Israel.

With the CAF Champions League looming large, Yanga believe Conté’s physicality and versatility in the holding role will anchor the midfield with strength and authority.

Doumbia: The creative spark

Joining Conté is 25-year-old Ivorian playmaker Mohamed Doumbia, fresh from Czech Republic’s Slovan Liberec. Already in Tanzania, Doumbia is set to join the squad in their pre-season training camp later this month.

Doumbia brings flair, vision, and silky dribbling to Yanga’s midfield. His ability to unlock defenses with clever passes and sharp movement will be a critical piece of Yanga’s attacking strategy as they chase both domestic and continental glory.

Leadership Speaks: “Eyes on African Glory”

Club president Engineer Hersi Said, speaking on the club’s transfer business, underlined Yanga’s focus on long-term continental dominance:

“Our main objective is not only to continue dominating the domestic league but also to compete at the highest level in Africa. To achieve that, we must focus on three key aspects: signing experienced players, strengthening our technical bench, and retaining our core squad.”
