Yanga, JKU meet in 2025 Muungano Cup final

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s football giants, Young Africans (Yanga), are set to face JKU today, May 1, 2025  in the highly anticipated final of the Muungano Cup (Union Cup) at Gombani Stadium in Pemba.

The showdown is scheduled to kick off at 7:15 p.m., with both teams eyeing the top prize and aiming to end the tournament on a high note.

The winner of the final will walk away with a cash prize of Sh50 million, while the runner-up will receive Sh30 million.

In addition to the team awards, individual excellence will also be recognized. 

There will be special prizes for the tournament’s best player, top scorer, best young player, and best goalkeeper, making the final even more competitive and motivating for the players. 

Yanga booked their spot in the final after a dramatic 3-1 win on penalties against Zimamoto, while JKU earned their place by defeating Azam FC with a 2-1 victory in regulation time.

Speaking ahead of the final, Yanga head coach Miloud Hamdi said his team is fully focused on lifting the title and taking home the top prize.

He acknowledged the strength of their opponents and urged his players to maintain concentration and intensity throughout the match.

“We are going to play against a strong team, and we must remain focused from start to finish. JKU are also aiming for victory, so we need to be at our best,” said Hamdi.

 “It is going to be a tough match as both teams are targeting a positive result. We have prepared well, and my players know what Yanga fans and members expect from them.”

On the other side, JKU head coach Juma Nuhu expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion. He said his players are highly motivated and well-prepared for what he described as a crucial match for their campaign.

“I know it will not be easy. Yanga are a strong team, but I also have committed players who are ready to give everything. Our main target is to keep the trophy here in Zanzibar,” said Nuhu.

Meanwhile, Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF) Secretary General Hussein Ahmada Vuai confirmed that all logistical and security preparations have been completed.

He encouraged football fans to turn up in large numbers to witness the exciting finale.
