Zanzibar Cable TV, Airtel ink strategic partnership deal

Dar es Salaam. Airtel Tanzania has entered into a strategic partnership with Zanzibar Cable Television (ZCTV) to allow payments for cable television through its mobile money service. The signing and partnership agreement were publicised on February 6, 2024, in Zanzibar and graced by the island’s minister of Communications and Transport, Dr Khali Mohamed.

Dr Mohamed said this partnership plays a crucial role in fostering employment opportunities and aligns with the government’s initiatives that are geared towards bolstering economic development and job creation.

“It is indeed commendable for Airtel Tanzania and Zanzibar Cable Television (ZCTV) to form a strategic partnership, which not only promises to further their business growth but also contributes significantly to our national economy,” he said.

ZCTV Operations Director Hafidhi Kassim said the payment solutions through the ‘Airtel Money’ service will allow for much more convenient and efficient access to ZCTV’s services than ever before.

“ZCTV is driven to ensure that all our subscribers are delighted with the total offering, and we are continuously looking to improve business processes to provide the best services to our customers, transcending traditional boundaries,” she said.

Director of Airtel Money Services, Mr Andrew Rugamba, said the company is dedicated to delivering services that meet the evolving digital needs of customers.

Through this partnership, ZCTV subscribers will be able to manage their payments efficiently and effortlessly.

“Our goal is to simplify everyday transactions, enhance customer experiences, and empower consumers to leverage their mobile devices for a broader range of activities,” he said. According to Mr Rugamba, this signing is strategic as many ZCTV subscribers are high-value customers whom Airtel Money is targeting for mobile money services.

According to statistics by the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA), there were 16,223 active cable subscriptions on the mainland by the end of 2023.

There is no exact data for cable subscribers in Zanzibar.

Among all regions of the Tanzanian mainland, Shinyanga leads by having 3,010 cable TV subscriptions, followed by Dar es Salaam with 1,846, Kagera with 1,400, and Tabora with 1,290, while Kilimanjaro and Ruvuma recorded the least subscriptions with 130 and 52, respectively.
