MP released after serving part of 6 months sentence

Dar es Salaam. Kilombero MP, Mr Peter Lijualikali (Chadema) is a free man today. He has been released today from Ukonga prison where he was serving a six months jail term imposed on him after he was found guilty of causing chaos during a municipal elections.

His release follows a High Court decision in favour of his appeal. The verdict was read on Thursday.

Mr Lijualikali spent three months serving the sentence and speaking soon after he was released he said his arrest, prosecution and ultimately sentencing was a work of an oppressive regime.

He said that the jail term will not make him relent.

"This fight for the democracy of this country will continue until justice and rule of law prevails, "he said.

The MP was welcomed by member of his party led by the Coastal Zonal chairman, Mr Fredrick Sumaye, his parents and relatives.
