Three jailed for smuggling 329 depot containers

Dar es Salaam. The High Court in Dar es Salaam today at the economic Crimes Division has sentenced two people in jail for three years in connection with smuggling of 329 containers from the Azam Inland Container Deport in Dar es Salaam.

Another person, a co-accused was sentenced to a two-year jail term.

The High Court Judge, Ms Winfrida Korosso found them guilty of transferring the containers from the depot without paying tax.

They were facing 110 counts but they have been convicted for 107 counts.

Those who were sentenced to jail are Raymond Adolf Louis who was the Manager for Operations and Security at Azam Internal Container Depot and Khalid Yusuph Hassan as well as Benson Vitalis Malembo.

Louis and Hassan have been sentenced for occasioning loss of Sh12.4billionn to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

When announcing the verdict, Judge Korosso said all the sentences will be served concurrently.

All the convicts will, after serving their jail term, pay an amount worth half of the loss occasioned the to TRA.
