Nairobi. At least 10 people were killed and scores more injured in two explosions at Gikomba Market Friday afternoon, say officials.
Kenya’s National Disaster Operation Centre said via its Twitter feed that witnesses report the first explosion was in a 14-seater bus while the second came from within the market.
The twin blasts come a mere 24 hours after British tour operators began evacuating tourists from Kenya following a travel warning earlier this week.
No one’s sure what caused the blasts but Kenya has been hit by a spate of attacks in recent months, mostly blamed on al-Shabab militants from nearby Somalia.
Kenya Red Cross says over 10 casualties have been evacuated to Kenyatta National Hospital, and is urging locals to “avoid the area.”
The latest reports say the number of deaths is expected to rise. At least 70 people are confirmed injured, while one suspect has been arrested.
