Kampala. Hajj Nasser Sebaggala announced on Monday he had resigned his post as Presidential Adviser to join the Opposition campaign for free and fair elections.

“I am not making any mistake to return home. I supported President Museveni on principle and since he has failed, there is no reason I should continue supporting him now,” Hajj Sebaggala said.

Addressing an impromptu press conference at his home in Kampala on Monday, Hajj Sebaggala apologised to his supporters: “I wish to express my regret to all my supporters for having changed course from my original stand against dictatorship and joined it. This will never happen again.”

In a one-page letter dated January 5, Hajj Sebaggala told President Museveni: “I joined you, your Excellency, on the understanding that things in the country would change for the better. Unfortunately, matters of the economy, democratic governance and accountability have got worse.”

Presidential press secretary Tamale Mirundi said Hajj Sebaggala was never a presidential adviser and challenged him to present his appointment letter.

“When a presidential adviser quits, he/she returns a vehicle and other things. Mr Sebaggala has nothing to surrender. In fact, it is like saying you are divorcing when you were never married,” Mr Mirundi said by telephone yesterday.  Mr Sebaggala, 67, said he is now going to direct his energies and resources to the struggle for good governance.
