Tanga. The Tanga City Council is scheduled to meet today in its first session to elect new leaders to run it after the 2015 General Election in October. While the Civic United Front (CUF) has already nominated Mr Rashid Jumbe, the Majengo Ward councillor, and Mr Mohamed Haniu, Msambweni Ward councillor to vie for the mayoral and deputy mayoral seats respectively, the ruling party has nominated Mr Mohamed Mustapha, the councillor for Nguvumali Ward to stand for the mayoral seat and Mr Mohamed Mwambea to be the deputy. Mr Mwambea is a councillor for Marungu.
According to reports, the CCM and CUF under the Coalition of Defenders of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa) are staging one of the hottest political battles ever held recently in this coastal city, each one trying to make sure that its members take over the reigns of the city authority. Tanga MP Mussa Mbarouk urged councillors-elect to make sure that CUF produces a mayor for the city.
He said the city had been governed by the ruling party for almost two decades without development to the people. He said time was ripe for the opposition to show the people of Tanga that the opposition is capable to deliver services to them, provided they stand firmly for unity and give cooperation to the coming administration.
