Dar es Salaam. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the parliamentary election in Fuoni Constituency following the death of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) candidate Abbas Ali Mwinyi, promising to announce a new date for candidate nominations.
Mr Abbas, the elder brother of Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, while receiving treatment at Lumumba Hospital in Mjini Magharibi Region.
A statement issued the same day by Fuoni Constituency Returning Officer Miraji Mwadini Haji said he had received official confirmation of Mr Abbas’s death in a letter from CCM Zanzibar Deputy Secretary General.
He explained that, as a result, the parliamentary election in Fuoni Constituency, located in West B District, Zanzibar, was suspended, effective September 25, 2025.
“Pursuant to Section 71(2) of the Elections Act No. 1 of 2024 on presidential, parliamentary, and councillors’ elections, the Commission will, through a notice in the Government Gazette, announce another date for candidate nominations, after which parliamentary election procedures in the constituency will continue.
“Therefore, the nominations of other candidates already cleared remain valid unless a candidate withdraws. In addition, there will be no parliamentary campaign activities in Fuoni Constituency until a new candidate is nominated,” reads the statement in part.
