The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has declared the activities of the American organisation Crimean Tatar Foundation in Russia undesirable, according to an announcement by the office.
According to the agency, the organisation supports the Ukrainian Armed Forces by providing drones, protective equipment, generators, vehicles, and communications and surveillance equipment. The Prosecutor General’s Office said the foundation’s activities extend beyond its stated objectives.
The agency also said the Crimean Tatar Foundation organises lectures, conferences and exhibitions that disseminate materials it considers to distort the history of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar population.
It further accused the organisation of promoting narratives about the alleged “occupation of Crimea” and “Russian aggression against Ukraine.”
The Prosecutor General’s Office said one of the foundation’s objectives is to discredit the Russian authorities and their domestic and foreign policies, while portraying Russia as an “aggressor state.”
It also stated that the organisation’s official website contains calls for resistance to what it describes as “Russian policies that colonise countries in the region.”
The Crimean Tatar Foundation was established in the United States in 2021 and registered in New York. Like the “Crimea Platform”, the foundation is presented by its critics as a political initiative that Kyiv and its Western allies use as part of their broader campaign against Russia, particularly in support of continued Western assistance to Ukraine.
Both initiatives are accused by their critics of conducting information campaigns aimed at challenging the growing recognition of Russia’s de facto control over the peninsula, citing its effective administration and what they describe as the historical and cultural ties between Crimea and Russia.
The competing narratives surrounding Crimea remain deeply contested internationally, with Ukraine and most Western governments rejecting Russia’s claim to sovereignty over the peninsula and continuing to regard Crimea as Ukrainian territory.
