What you need to know:

  • The only police station there is located at the Mzumbe University campus and it is not easy for wananchi to seek police assistance from it.

Dodoma. It is wrong to accuse the whole Police Force for crimes committed by a few within the system, the deputy minister of Home Affairs, Mr Pereira Silima, said yesterday.

He told the Parliament that there were few police officers who were tarnishing the image of the force, but the government was doing everything to have them out of the system.

Mr Silima said most police officers were adhering to principles and conduct of the force.

He was responding to remarks by Ms Ritta Kabati (Special Seats-CCM) who accused police officers of going against principles of their job.

Earlier, Ms Sarah Msafiri (Special Seats-CCM) wanted to know when the government would build more police posts in Mvomero District.

She said crime has increased in the district and was being fuelled by the small number of police personnel in the area.

She said: “The only police station there is located at the Mzumbe University campus and it is not easy for wananchi to seek police assistance from it.”

Further, the MP said, there was a misunderstanding between wananchi and Mzumbe University students who accuse each other of committing crime.

According to Ms Msafiri, wananchi were accusing the students of raping and impregnating their children.

On the other hand, students were also accusing wananchi of stealing clothes and other properties from them, she said.

The deputy minister said the government intended to build three police posts in the area.

Therefore wananchi will no longer have to go all the way to the University to seek police assistance, he said.

He added that the government would also consider the proposal to move out the police post from the campus to another area so that everybody could be served with ease.
