Butiku: This why leadership vacuum exists

Executive director of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Foundation, Mr Joseph Butiku.

What you need to know:

The executive director of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Foundation, Mr Joseph Butiku, has said leadership vacuum in the country results from the fact that existing leaders do not obey the laws or read the country’s constitution.

Mbeya. Leading by simply issuing directives, ignoring the country laws and failure to abide by the constitution are some of the shortcomings causing leadership vacuum, according to the executive director of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Foundation, Mr Joseph Butiku.

Mr Butiku argued that even if these leaders carefully read the laws and the constitution, then they did not follow them deliberately hence causing the government to fail to fulfill its duty of bringing development to the people.

He made the remarks on Monday, March 25 at Mkapa Conference Hall in Mbeya, as he presented a topic on participatory leadership, during a debate initiated by the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Foundation.

“The citizens are also not taught the constitution so that they would know their place in the country set up and their role in bringing about development,” said Mr Butiku.

He observed that the country had lost direction when it comes to organizing political parties to participate in public debates on development.

Mbeya Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila on the other hand said leaders are supposed to train themselves on a daily basis on how to live diligently and with patriotism.

He added that many leaders have been paying lip-service when it comes to promoting patriotism, as they did not live by what they preached.
