Dar es Salaam. Application for two mining licences by Tancoal under the Local Content law is waiting for approval by Tanzania Mining Commission (TMC), the executive secretary, Prof Shukrani Manya, has said.

In an exclusive interview with The Citizen, Prof Manya said that the commission was preparing to hold the second meeting to pave the way for approving Tancoal’s applications for new mining licences.

“All mining licences under the Local Content law are subject to a thorough screening process. We have already held the first meeting and now we are preparing for the second meeting,” said Prof Manya who is the chief executive officer of TMC.

Between 2016 and April this year, the government suspended the process of granting new mining licences following enactment of a new mining law in 2017.

The Local Content law for the mining sector was put in place in 2017.

The Tancoal head of Geology Department, Mr Alex Bashire, said the application under Local Content law started in July this year, saying the necessary documents had been furnished to the commission early last week.

“We were recently requested by the commission to submit some missing documents under the Local Content law. We have already done so,” said Bashire.

Tancoal CEO James Shedd said the two licences were crucial for the mining company to expand production amidst rising demand for coal within the country and for export.
