GSMA recognises Bharti founder for pioneering modern telecommunications

Barcelona. Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Bharti Mittal has been conferred the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the GSMA in recognition of his pioneering role in shaping modern telecommunications and expanding global connectivity.

The rare honour, awarded to only a select group of industry leaders in GSMA’s history, acknowledges Mittal’s lasting contribution to transforming the global communications ecosystem and connecting governments, businesses and billions of consumers worldwide.

The award was presented at the globally renowned Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in the presence of Spain’s King Felipe VI, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Catalonia President Salvador Illa and leading global telecommunications executives.

A visionary leader in the telecom sector, Mittal built Bharti Airtel into one of the world’s leading mobile network operators, with operations spanning India and Africa and serving more than half a billion customers, placing it among the top three mobile operators globally.

Mittal has been instrumental in expanding mobile services across emerging markets, helping bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion. During his tenure as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018, he championed policies aimed at encouraging investment, innovation and industry collaboration to connect underserved populations.

This latest recognition adds to Mittal’s previous honours from the GSMA, including the Chairman’s Award received in 2008 and again in 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the global mobile industry.

He was also recognised at the 2019 Mobile World Congress following his chairmanship.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mittal said the recognition represents not only a personal milestone but also a tribute to India’s telecommunications journey and the collective efforts behind Bharti’s global success. He noted that telecommunications continues to expand opportunity by placing essential services in the hands of individuals and unlocking human potential worldwide.

The GSMA Lifetime Achievement Award remains one of the highest honours in the telecommunications sector, reserved for leaders whose leadership and innovation have left a lasting impact on the global industry.
