Arumeru. President John Magufuli has laid the foundation stone for a Sh520 billion project that will see the construction of 56 wells for clean water that will aslo ensure conservation of the environment in Arusha Region.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone in one of the deepest wells dug in Kimnyaki Village, Dr Magufuli said he was satisfied with implementation of the project that is set to end water woes in Arusha and several areas of Arumeru District.

"I congratulate you very much for implementing this project. God bless you very much,” said Dr Magufuli.

Earlier, Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (AUWSA) director general Luth Koya said a total of 56 wells will be dug to boost access to water.

She said the wells will have the capacity to produce two million litres per day, enough to end water woes in Arusha City Council that requires 940,000 litres per day.

According to her, the well in Kimnyaki Village alone has the capacity to produce 400,000 litres per hour but only 300,000 will be produced per hour.

The president revealed that the project will be funded by the Tanzania government in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB).

For his part, Arumeru District Commissioner Jerry Muro thanked the Head of State for provision of Sh3 billion for implementing free education proggrammes and Sh500 million for construction of a health centre in Nduruma Area.

“We also received Sh104 million for construction of a health centre in Usa River and Sh400 million for projects in Mbuyuni,” he said.

The event to lay the foundation stone in the village was witnessed by several ministers including the minister of Water and Irrigation Prof Makame Mbarawa, Arusha regional commissioner Mrisho Gambo and many others.
