What you need to know:

According to Mr Machali, there were many loopholes in the current laws and that there was a need for enacting new or amending existing ones to help stop corrupt leaders and public servants from misusing taxpayers’ money.

Dodoma. The minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, said yesterday that the current laws and legal procedures were strong enough to curb corruption and cases related to economic sabotage in the country.

Dr Migiro said there were strong laws to convict and punish people who would be found guilty of misusing, stealing or sabotaging the nation’s economy.

The minister was responding to Mr Moses Machali (Kasulu North- NCCR Mageuzi) who wanted to know if the government was planning to enact new laws that would help to curb corruption in the country.

According to Mr Machali, there were many loopholes in the current laws and that there was a need for enacting new or amending existing ones to help stop corrupt leaders and public servants from misusing taxpayers’ money.

“I think it is high time the government came here with a bill that will lead to the formation of new laws to punish people who are involved in corruption-related activities,” he said.

According to Mr Machali the new law must state categorically that those who would be found guilty of stealing public funds and sabotaging the economy would be hanged.

Dr Migiro responded that the country was being ruled democratically by adhering to all principles of good governance and that all those who would be found guilty would be punished according to the laws of the land.
