Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has announced plans to recruit 2,460 employees under the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, covering two sections from Dar es Salaam to Makutopora.
These positions come on top of more than 115,000 jobs already generated by contractors working across the first six phases of the project.
According to a TRC statement, recruitment will be carried out in phases. In the 2024/25 financial year, over 500 employees were hired, while in the current financial year 2025/26, an additional 272 are expected to be recruited. The process will continue until all 2,460 vacancies are filled.
The corporation noted that the 115,000 jobs created through contractors have benefited Tanzanians with different education levels, ranging from primary school leavers to those with specialised skills in various fields.
“Breaking down the figures, 35,000 of these were direct jobs, while more than 80,000 were indirect. The latter include opportunities for food vendors, motorcycle and tricycle taxi operators, as well as service providers in mobile communications and money transfer services,” the statement read.
The creation of these jobs is part of the government’s directive that all major state investments must directly benefit Tanzanians, particularly those living in areas surrounding the projects, while also generating opportunities aligned with education and skills levels
