Dar es Salaam. State machinery unfairly favoured CCM candidate and the winner of the just-ended Chalinze parliamentary by-election, Mr Ridhiwani Kikwete, human rights activists have claimed.

An analysis by the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) and the Southern Africa Human Rights NGO Networks (SAHRINGON) allege that most of the ruling party’s campaign rallies were attended by senior government officials who enjoyed state resources including security details and vehicles.

The report also claims the police strengthened security during rallies organised by the ruling party candidate who is the son of President Jakaya Kikwete, compared to those organised by other parties. Speaking yesterday in the city, the national coordinator for SAHRINGON, Ms Martina Kabisama, said President Jakaya Kikwete’s move to reveal to the media soon after casting his ballot that he had voted for the CCM candidate and hoped he would win amounted to campaigning for him.
