Road users to start paying fees at the Nyerere Bridge

The lowest charge stands at Sh300 for bicycles and the highest fee is Sh75, 000 for abnormally wide vehicles, said the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications, Mr Joseph Nyamuhanga.
Dar es Salaam. The government has announced that the Julius Nyerere Bridge which links Kigamboni to the rest of Dar es Salaam will start charging user fees.
The lowest charge stands at Sh300 for bicycles and the highest fee is Sh75, 000 for abnormally wide vehicles, said the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications, Mr Joseph Nyamuhanga.
“With effect from Saturday this week, all users of the bridge, except pedestrians, will be charged,” Mr Nyamuhanga told reporters.
Other means of transport that will be affected include motorcycles whose owners will be charged Sh600. For carts, tricycles, three wheeler motorcycles (bajaji) and saloon cars, the owners will cough up pay Sh1,500 for each one way trip.
For pick-ups that carry up to a maximum of two tonnes and station wagons, Sh2,000 will be charged, while minibuses carrying up to 15 passengers and those ferrying up to 29 passengers, Sh3,000 and Sh5,000 will be charged on them respectively.
In addition, Sh7,000 will be charged for vehicles carrying more than 29 passengers and tractors without trailers while Sh10,000 will be paid for tractors with a trailer.
Mr Nyamuhanga said the tolls that will be collected over the next 30 years will be channelled towards paying back National Social Security Fund that contributed 60 per cent of the Sh254 billion for construction of the 680-metre bridge. The remaining funds came from the government.
