Tanzania becomes latest African nation to effect plastic bags ban

What you need to know:

  • With effect from June 1, Tanzania is banning the importation, production, sale and use of plastic bags, becoming the 34th African country to implement such restrictions.
  • The world currently produces more than 300 million tonnes of plastics annually and there are at least five trillion plastic pieces floating in oceans, scientists have estimated.
