Tanzania collects Sh70 billion from planes using its airspace

What you need to know:
- The collections are the result of technological improvements that made the country able to detect planes passing through Tanzania's airspace
Tanzania has collected more than Sh70 billion for this financial year, which is the revenue generated by the planes that use its airspace.
These collections are the result of technological improvements that made the country able to detect planes passing through Tanzania's airspace.
This was stated today, Monday, June 12, 2023 by the Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Atupele Mwakibete, in a meeting of stakeholders in the aviation sector held at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam.
He said that prior to the introduction of the technologies, Tanzania was only collecting about Sh24 billion in 2014 from the planes using its airspace.
"At the moment, no plane passing through Tanzania's airspace is invisible, and I congratulate the Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) for increasing the collection," he said.
According to Mwakibete, by the end of this fiscal year, TCAA will have collected Sh83 billion from the planes.
However, he emphasized that TCAA has set itself the goal of collecting Sh87 billion in the next financial year for that region alone.
Speaking at the meeting, Acting Director of TCAA, Daniel Malanga, said this year stakeholders from inside and outside the country were invited to participate.
The two-day meeting, he said, will involve several issues to exchange experiences and strengthen Tanzania's air security.
"Aviation security increases the government's income because many planes will be attracted to Tanzania's airspace," he said.
