TRA targets wider tax base in Mbeya

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has said it will strengthen taxpayer services and expand the tax base through registration of new taxpayers and formalisation of informal businesses to improve voluntary tax compliance.

The plan was outlined during a visit to Rungwe District in Mbeya Region, where TRA Commissioner General Mr Yusuph Mwenda said the authority is focused on improving service delivery to support taxpayers in meeting their obligations.

He said TRA’s mandate is to serve citizens efficiently and that engagement with taxpayers remains key to improving compliance and widening the revenue base.

“We will continue listening to taxpayers and resolving the challenges they face. I urge TRA managers in all regions to leave their offices, visit taxpayers in their areas and engage with them directly,” he said.

Mr Mwenda said TRA will continue using its Business Facilitation Desk to address taxpayer concerns and improve the business environment.

He added that better relations between TRA and taxpayers are expected to increase voluntary compliance and strengthen revenue collection.

TRA Board Chairman Mr Uledi Musa commended officers at the Kasumulu Customs Station and other border posts in Mbeya for improving customs revenue collection and facilitating trade.

He said Tanzania’s tax system and business environment continue to attract traders from neighbouring countries to use Tanzanian border facilities.

“I congratulate you for building good relationships with taxpayers and facilitating trade at the Kasumulu border, which has enabled you to exceed revenue collection targets for 10 consecutive months in the 2025/2026 financial year,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner General Mr Mcha Hassan Mcha said TRA will continue to support businesses and urged taxpayers to report challenges requiring intervention.

Mbeya TRA Regional Manager Mr Musibu Shabani said cooperation with taxpayers had enabled the region to surpass revenue targets for 10 consecutive months in the 2025/2026 financial year.

He said the region will continue improving service delivery through closer engagement with taxpayers and faster resolution of operational challenges.

Business operators in Uyole Valley pledged cooperation with TRA, saying tax compliance supports national development and economic growth.
