Moshi. The Stefano Moshi Memorial University College (SMMUCo) plans to establish a new campus for science and technology studies, it was announced here at the weekend.

The proposed campus, to be located in Machame, Hai District, will be geared to train scientists, engineers and architects, according to the vice chancellor, Prof Arnold Temu.

He revealed this during the 8th graduation ceremony held here on Saturday during which a total of 1,154 graduands were conferred with degrees, advanced diplomas, ordinary diplomas and certificates.

Prof Temu said the northern diocese of the Lutheran Church has already made available 80 hectares of land at Msufini in Machame for the purpose.

SMMUCo, which is based at Mwika on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, is under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT).

Officiating at the graduation held at the university’s campus in Moshi, the ELCT head, Dr Alex Malasusa, urged Tanzanians to preach peace and for the country to avoid plunging into chaos because of the recent elections.

He said a political crisis would not benefit anybody and that everybody will lose in ther event of a breach of peace in the country. He warned students in various colleges against being used by politicians bent on fomenting trouble.

“The elections are over and we should now respect leaders who have been elected for the development of our country,” Dr Malasusa said, adding that political differences should not be used to create enmity among Tanzanians.
