Dar es Salaam. Unidentified robbers have cut short the life of a young University of Dar es Salaam lecturer on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Patrick Rweyongeza was shot dead in a robbery incident that occurred at Magomeni in Dar es Salaam just few minutes after he had withdrawn Sh5.5 million from his account at the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), Ubungo Branch.

The uncle of the deceased, Damas Kayanda, told The Citizen that, Rweyongeza who he described as polite, was God fearing and brilliant, and that he was planning to leave the country to pursue his doctorate degree in the UK.

“Last month when he told my wife that he was set to leave for UK, she advised him to get married first, but he told her that he was only thinking of school before committing himself to family life,” he said, adding: “Even his siblings and other relatives were cracking a joke to their brother pushing him to introduce them to their in-law but Patrick never did that,’’ said.

Patrick was a lecturer at UDSM’s College of Engineering and Technology. He taught building design, numerical methods as well as analysis and mechanics, among others.

The college head, Dr John Makunza, narrated that on Wednesday Patrick left the campus in the morning with three colleagues to go to Aggrey Street at Kariakoo for an official task. It was after the trip that he went to draw the money before getting into his private car.

As he was driving along Morogoro Road, suspected bandits riding on a motorcycle blocked his car ordering him to hand them the money. After confrontation, the robbers opened fire, killing him instantly before running away with the bag to an unknown destination. Kinondoni regional police commander Camilius Wambura confirmed the incident, saying police have launched a manhunt to net the culprits.
