Maximo back in Tanzania to lead KMC in Premier League battle

Former Taifa Stars head coach Marcio Maximo

Dar es Salaam. Former Taifa Stars head coach Marcio Maximo is expected to arrive in Tanzania on Saturday as he prepares to take over as head coach of Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) Football Club ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 Mainland Tanzania Premier League season.

The Brazilian tactician, who remains a beloved figure in Tanzanian football, will be making his third return to the country, having previously coached the national team Taifa Stars from 2006 to 2010 and Young Africans SC (Yanga) in 2014.

His reappointment marks a major move by KMC as they seek to restructure their technical bench and improve their league standing after a challenging season.

Marcio Maximo, a seasoned coach known for developing young talent and instilling tactical discipline, brings a wealth of experience.

Beyond his work in Tanzania, Maximo has coached various clubs including Democrata-GV in 2012, Francana in 2013, Costa Rica EC in 2017, and most recently Prudentópolis in 2025.

He also managed the Guyana national football team between 2019 and 2022, expanding his international résumé.

Before accepting the KMC role, Maximo had reportedly been in discussions to take over the Zanzibar national team (Zanzibar Heroes) and to launch youth football development programs across the islands. His reputation as a mentor of youth players and his commitment to long-term football development made him a strong candidate for both roles.

However, it is KMC that has secured his services for the coming campaign.

In an interview with The Citizen newspaper yesterday, Maximo confirmed that he had agreed to coach KMC and expressed his excitement over the new challenge

. “It is a good challenge for me and for the technical bench,” he said. “I appreciate the effort of KMC for trusting me with this responsibility. My assistant coach and I are very motivated to improve the team and the club as a whole.”

Maximo acknowledged the resource limitations KMC faces compared to bigger Tanzanian clubs, but remained optimistic.

“We know about the resource limits, but we believe we can build at least one competitive team,” he explained. “Taledo, who joins us as an analyst, will be instrumental in setting our tactical structure and helping us compete at a high level.”

Reflecting on the current state of Tanzanian football, Maximo noted major improvements since his previous stint in the country.

“The Tanzania Premier League is more competitive today,” he observed. “There are good coaches, talented players, and stronger clubs. We must be very intense in our approach — organized in our style of play, strong in both attack and defense, and quick in transitions if we want to improve the team’s fortunes.”

The Brazilian coach added that returning to Tanzania felt like coming home. “We are proud to return to a special country like Tanzania. We have good memories here,” he said.

“We are hopeful of a revival. I thank KMC management for believing in our ability. They have shown they genuinely want to take the club to the next level.”

Marcio Maximo’s return has sparked excitement among Tanzanian football fans, many of whom fondly remember his tenure with the national team.

One of his most historic achievements came in 2009 when he guided Taifa Stars to qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals held in Ivory Coast — a major milestone in the nation’s football history.

With KMC looking to improve from last season’s performance, all eyes will be on Maximo as he attempts to steer the Kinondoni-based club into a new era of competitiveness, structure, and ambition.

His arrival could mark the beginning of a fresh chapter not only for KMC, but also for Tanzanian football at large.
