Dar es Salaam.  After a brilliant start to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Tanzania’s national team, Taifa Stars, return to action tonight in a high-stakes Group B clash against Mauritania at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm East Africa Time, with the hosts eager to claim a second consecutive victory that would solidify their position at the top of the group. Earlier at the same venue, Burkina Faso will face the Central African Republic in another Group B encounter, kicking off at 5pm.

With just one round of matches played, Group B remains wide open. A win for Taifa Stars tonight would take them to six points and give them a clear advantage heading into their final group matches against Madagascar and the Central African Republic.

A second victory would significantly ease their path to the quarterfinals, as they would need only one more win—or at least two draws—in their remaining fixtures to secure a place in the last eight. Captain Job rallies fans, Says team is ready Taifa Stars captain Dickson Job has called on Tanzanians to show up in large numbers at the stadium and rally behind the team.

Speaking after their final training session at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana ground, Job said morale is high, and the squad is fully focused on securing another victory.

“We’re all in good shape and ready to give our best in the upcoming match against Mauritania and the ones that follow,” said Job.  “It won’t be an easy game, as all teams in this group still have a chance to qualify. But we promise to fight hard and aim for the best possible results.”

Tactical battle expected

Tonight’s match promises to be a fascinating tactical contest between two sides that emphasize midfield control. While both teams enjoy structured build-up play, key stylistic differences could determine the outcome.

Tanzania’s strength lies in their disciplined defensive organization and ability to recover quickly when not in possession.

Mauritania, in contrast, often rely on prolonged attacking spells that keep opposing backlines under constant pressure.

Key players to watch

For the Taifa Stars, all eyes will be on midfield maestro Feisal Salum ‘Fei Toto’, whose standout performance in the opening match earned praise for his vision, passing, and creativity in the final third. Another vital figure is Mudathir Yahya, a box-to-box midfielder known for his tactical discipline and ability to drive forward during transitions.

His dual role in protecting the defense and launching attacks will be crucial. Mauritania’s biggest threat is El Hacen El Id, their experienced midfield general who has featured in Spain’s top leagues with Levante and Lugo. Technically gifted and calm under pressure, El Id is a player Tanzania must closely monitor to avoid costly lapses.

Big incentives at stake

Beyond the pride of winning, Taifa Stars have added motivation thanks to a reward pledge by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. For every goal scored tonight, the team will earn Sh10 million, boosting morale and attacking intent. And if Tanzania goes on to lift the CHAN 2024 trophy, a grand prize of Sh1 billion awaits the team—a symbol of national appreciation and recognition for their achievement.

With the stakes rising and national expectations high, all roads lead to Benjamin Mkapa Stadium tonight as Tanzania looks to take one more step toward continental glory.
