Unguja. The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has said it is prioritising the preservation and development of historic sites, recognising their importance for the economy and cultural heritage.
President Hussein Mwinyi made the remarks yesterday during a meeting with Dutch Ambassador to Tanzania, Marjo Crompvoet, at the State House in Zanzibar.
Dr Mwinyi highlighted ongoing restoration work at the Majestic Cinema in Vuga, undertaken in partnership with the government of Japan. The project aims to retain the building’s original design while ensuring its sustainability.
“Once completed, the facility will host a variety of events,” he said. He added that the government has long-term plans to conserve other historic buildings, which play a key role in promoting Zanzibar and supporting tourism, as many visitors come to see these landmarks.
Dr Mwinyi expressed gratitude to the Netherlands for strengthening bilateral relations and supporting development projects in Zanzibar. He also invited Dutch investors to explore opportunities in sectors such as tourism and the blue economy.
“These initiatives will increase tourist arrivals from the Netherlands, and Zanzibar still needs more investors in industries, fisheries, and agriculture,” he said. Ambassador Crompvoet assured Zanzibar of continued cooperation and support across various sectors and welcomed the economic progress being achieved, including infrastructure development.
Dr Mwinyi also met Slovakian Ambassador to Tanzania, Ivan Lančarič, accompanied by Honorary Consul, Mustafa Khataw, whose office will be based in Zanzibar.
The President assured Slovakia that Zanzibar is ready to expand cooperation in economic development, investment, trade, and tourism, and encouraged promotion of Zanzibar in the Slovakian tourism market.
Ambassador Lančarič said Slovakia plans to open its embassy in Tanzania in early June, alongside a smaller mission in Zanzibar, to strengthen bilateral collaboration.
“Slovakia has advanced industrial development, automotive manufacturing technology, trade, and investment,” he said.
