  • A cabinet minister in Tanzania has ordered a review of regulations governing environmental management fees and charges in efforts to promote proper waste management and recycling practices in the country.

Dar es Salaam. The government has ordered the removal of “unnecessary” garbage collection fees in a fresh bid to improve waste management.

Environment minister January Makamba told the National Environment Management Council (Nemc) on Friday to review the Environmental Management (Fees and Charges) Regulations-2004, which requires waste management companies to pay Sh50,000 for a licence, and Sh200, 000 as disposal fee per year.

The minisster also directed the Council to remove other areas in the piece of legislation that frustrate waste management companies from exercising their duties effectively.

“All unfriendly environmental fees and charges imposed on solid waste, should be removed,” Mr Makamba said during a dialogue with some environment stakeholders in his offices.

Ms Joyce Msuya, the deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), attended the meeting with senior government officials and other stakeholders, including innovators. They met to discuss various issues associated with environmental conservation.

Among the issues discussed was the impact of fees contained in the Environmental Management Act of 2004.

The fees and charges are paid directly to the city authorities, municipals and other governmental agencies.
