Dar es Salaam. Foreign earnings from tourism rose by 13.6 per cent during the year ending June 2018, propelled by an increase in tourist arrivals, thanks to joint marketing initiatives by the public and private sector players.

Tanzania earned $2,403.2 million (Sh5.44 trillion) in the year ended June 2018, up from $2,115.6 million during a similar period last year, Bank of Tanzania figures show.

“This was due to increase in tourist arrivals following enhanced promotional activities by the government and private sector,” the BoT says in its July 2018 Monthly Economic Review.

Figures from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism show that Tanzania attracted nearly 1.3 million visitors in 2017, up from 1.2 million in 2016.

Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) managing director Devota Mdachi told The Citizen yesterday that the number of promotional activities rose by 60 per cent during the year ending June 2018 compared to a similar period last year, thanks to the government’s decision to raise TTB budget.

“We have done a lot of promotional activities. We invited journalists from China, Japan and Turkey who visited the country and wrote news about our country which we believe helped to attract more visitors,” she said.

According to her, in 2017/18 the board attended 14 international exhibitions where it used the opportunity to promote tourism attractions and to meet the world’s largest tourism agents.

This year’s target, she said, is to attend 22 international exhibitions as well as organized events including 4th Swahili International Tourism Expos (S!TE) among others.
