‘Don’t drink and Drive’ Campaign by SBL reaches out to Dodoma residents

Dodoma. The Campaign dubbed ‘Don’t drink and Drive’ by Serengeti Breweries Ltd has Friday, 22nd March, 2019 reached out to Dodoma residents aiming at educating road users on responsible alcohol consumption, an initiative to support the government in curbing road accidents.

Launched at the Morena Hotel, the campaign was graced by Dodoma Regional Traffic Police Officer (RTO), ACP Nuru Selemani and started with a forum to discuss responsible drinking among road users and other members of the society. Spearheaded by the regional traffic police division, the forum amassed various stakeholders in the transportation sector including Sumatra, drivers, motor cyclists (bodaboda riders) and the general public.

Speaking during the event, SBL’s Director of Corporate Relations, John Wanyancha said that responsible drinking campaign aims at building awareness to the targeted cadre that an alcohol consumer need not to get addicted, noting that they can drink responsibly and get on with their pleasures without unprecedented incidences.

 “SBL is committed to joining hands with the government and other like-minded individuals, organizations and stakeholders in ensuring that the community, especially the drivers who are mostly prone to drink-induced accidents are sensitized on the dangers of irresponsible drinking and urged to practice safe and responsible drinking and driving”, Wanyancha said.

Along with education, SBL has also provided 80 road safety reflectors to BodaBoda riders in Dodoma region, a major shot-in-the-arm for the region’s law-enforcement officers in enforcing the rule of law on the city’s roads.

In his speech, RTO Selemani expressed his gratitude to SBL for organizing the campaign, saying that by involving the police force, the beer-maker had set the ball rolling in supporting the government in creating awareness on the dangers of irresponsible drinking and created a forum on how to curb the menace.

He called on the motor cyclists to always use the reflectors for their own safety, their passengers and other pedestrians. 

“We all know that alcoholism is more often than not, linked to reckless driving which in some cases leads to serious road accidents which have serious impacts in the society.   The impacts not only affect consumers but also endanger the lives of others, thus losing or disabling many people who otherwise would have contributed to the country’s social-economic growth,” Selemani said.

Started five years ago, the campaign has so far imparted awareness on responsible drinking to hundreds of participants across the country.

Earlier in January, SBL launched a similar campaign in Mwanza region, a very successful event that was recently followed by an another equally educative one in Dar es Salaam region before reaching in Morogoro, in which the city’s traffic police department handed-over reflectors to bodaboda riders to impart the spirit of observing road safety rules.
