What you need to know:

Tarime Urban MP, Ms Esther Matiko (Chadema) today questioned why police and prison officers continue to purchase own uniforms, saying it was unacceptable and contrary country’s laws.

Dodoma. Tarime Urban MP Esther Matiko (Chadema) has come up with an argument over the setup requiring prison and police officers to purchase uniforms by themselves contrary to the laws of the service.

In her impromptu question to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa in Parliament on Thursday, May 23, 2019, Ms Matiko sought to know how the government was prepared to refund police and prison officers who spent own monies on uniforms.

“Most of them differ in appearance because of the quality and price of materials used in making their uniforms. Most officers tend to avoid high price garments, therefore falling to low quality materials,” she said.

The MP spent over 100 days in remand prison following decision of the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’ Court to invalidate her bail in an ongoing case of illegal demonstration facing the lawmaker and eight other leaders of the main opposition party-Chadema.

Responding to the question, Mr Majaliwa said the government has an obligation to provide equipment including uniforms and associated accessories.

He said currently, the government will probe to find truth of the matter, coordinate better ways of providing prison and police officers with uniforms and that the parliament will be given feedback.
