Dar es Salaam. Two companies have partnered to invest in the Mtwara Freeport Zone (MFPZ).

Mac Group of Dar es Salaam and Pacific International Lines (PIL) of Singapore yesterday presented a cheque for $526,280 (Sh842 million) to the regulator – the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) – as a step towards realising that objective.

Speaking during the cheque handover, Mac Group representative Nagarayan Sankaranarayanan said the move was part of its growth strategies and efforts to contribute towards the fledging oil and gas sector in Tanzania.

Mac Group is involved in banking, insurance, consumer products, real estate and logistics. Mac Group and PIL own Altus Oilfield Services FPZ Ltd. Last month, EPZA entered into an agreement with Altus and three other firms – Schlumberger Seaco Inc of the US, Tans Ocean Industries and Services of Dubai and Lenna of Iran – to offer various services to oil and gas explorers in Mtwara. EPZA is developing 10 hectares which are part of Mtwara Freeport Zone’s 110 hectares for investment.

“Our aspiration is that the EPZA and MFPZ’s oilfield service operators shall jointly fast-track the development of MFPZ with adequate infrastructure and resources to balance the capacities across the entire tri-stream oil and gas value chain,” Mr Sankaranarayanan said.
