Harare mayor Jacob Mafume was first arrested on November 25 for allegedly parcelling out land to his sister and a colleague.
A Zimbabwean magistrate on Thursday jailed the mayor of the country's capital amid claims by the opposition that its members are under siege.
Harare mayor Jacob Mafume was first arrested on November 25 for allegedly parcelling out land to his sister and a colleague.
Mr Mafume, a senior member of the main opposition MDC Alliance, was re-arrested on Monday on accusations that he tried to bribe a witness in his criminal case.
Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna said the mayor had violated his bail conditions and will be jailed until January 28 when his trial starts.
"There was a condition for him not to interfere," Mr Nduna ruled.
"He has already interfered (with a witness).
"This cannot be cured by any other condition but to send him to jail."
Harare's deputy mayor is also in remand prison after he was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly selling land illegally.
Mr Mafume only became mayor in September after his predecessor Herbert Gomba, also from MDC Alliance, was arrested on criminal abuse of office charges.
Several other MDC Alliance councillors have been arrested on corruption allegations.
The MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa says President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government is using the arrests to seize control of urban areas that are controlled by the opposition.
While the ruling Zanu PF controls central government, MDC Alliance is in charge of 28 out of 32 urban local authorities.
