Mwanza. At least Sh18 billion has been set aside for construction of a 12.1- kilometre tarmac road in Ilemela Municipal Council, Mwanza region.
This was revealed on Friday, June 8, 2018 by the Ilemela District Executive Director (Ded), Mr John Wanga, during the signing ceremony of the project’s construction agreement with a Chinese company, Sino-Hydro Corporation Limited.
Speaking during the event, he said, the construction will commence on June 15 and that it will be completed in the next 15 months.
“The funds will also be used for installation of special waste collection containers and traffic lights,” he said.
Mr Wanga named the road to be constructed during the implementation of the project as that stretching from Sabasaba, Kiseke, Buswelu, Isamilo Big Bite, Mji Mwema, Makongoro Junction and Mwaloni to Kigoto.
Ilemela Municipal Mayor Renatus Mulunga said apart from enhancing transport and communications, the roads will open business and economic opportunities in the area.
Mr Mulunga said a total of Sh436 million has been paid to residents whose plots and properties have been affected by the project, adding that a total of Sh636 million will be spent for that purpose.
The Tanzania Rural and Urban Road Agency (Tarura) Mwanza regional coordinator, Mr Kokya Fuko, said the agency will collaborate with other governmental authorities to closely monitor the implementation of the project.
A representative of the Chinese construction company, Mr Jin Bin, assured of timely implementation of the project in accordance with their contract.
For her part, Ms Magdalena Lazaro, a resident of Kiseke hailed the government for the project, calling upon the Chinese firm to involve residents in casual works.
