MCL shines in journalism excellence awards

Dar es Salaam. Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) which publishes The Citizen, Mwananchi and MwanaSpoti Outshone other media houses after many of its journalists were named winners in Excellence in Journalism in Tanzania (EjaT) awards last night.

MCL also produced 2016 overall winner in the awards in the name of Florence Majani, assistant news editor for the leading Kiswahili daily in the country, Mwananchi.

Apart from being named overall winner, Ms Majani emerged winner in two other categories namely culture and sports reporting as well as human rights and good governance reporting.

Sauli Giliard, is another journalist from MCK who was among very few journalists who won min more than one category, he emerged winner in HIV/Aids as well as agriculture and agri-business reporting categories.

Other winners from MCL include Mussa Juma, Mwananchi Senior reporter in Arusha whose story in Faru John controversy inspired the judges to name him the winner in the category of news and current affairs while Peter Nyanje’s series on planned economic activities in Selous game reserves made him win in tourism and conservation reporting category.

Kelvin Matandiko won in the business, economy and finance reporting.

Speaking after she was named an overall winner, Ms Majani said dedication to her work was what made her write the stories wh9ich inspired the judges.

“When I go to sleep, I usually wake up at night and start to think about news idea. I always think not only about writing, but writing things which will make a difference,” she said.

She urged fellow journalists to read extensively so as to be knowledgeable, a trait which will enable them to write well.
