Muheza. A major Sh17 billion water supply and sanitation project is set to ease water scarcity problems in Muheza District.

District executive director Aidan Jungu said implementation is scheduled to commence in the 2016/2017 financial year.

On completion, the project could enable more than 62,925 people in Muheza Town to access clean and safe water.

The district bears an estimated 80 to 90 per cent of the region’s water-borne disease burden, largely due to acute water shortages.

Ironically, Muheza is home to the main source of water that feeds Tanga City.

District water engineer Hans Patrick said the project would involve the construction of a water plant at Kisiwani Village about 22.7 km from Muheza.

Water will be sourced from Zigi River, originating from the East Usambara Mountains. The same river supplies water to Tanga City through a dam at Mabayani.

Other beneficiaries include residents of Lusanga and Kilulu wards and populations adjacent to the water pipeline.

He explained that the first phase of the project would involve the laying of 6,000 cubic metres of pipes from the Zigi River.

“The second phase covers improvement in community and household urban sanitation in Muheza while the third would involve capacity building of Muheza Water Authority staff to manage the project,” he said.

In a related incident, Muheza MP Adadi Rajabu towards the end of last month handed over equipment worth Sh31 million to Majengo ward in Muheza District for the Shauri Moyo water project.

The MP told residents at a public rally that solving the chronic water problems was on top of his agenda.

He thanked stakeholders he had teamed up with to implement the water project that would benefit over 6,000 residents.

“I vowed to end the incessant water problem in this district. I renew my pledge. I will not rest until the vast majority of residents of get a permanent solution to the supply of potable water. This is just a beginning.” the MP said. He asked Muheza residents to play their part in ending the water problems.
