TADB offers Sh1.1 trillion in low-interest loans to farmers over 10 years

As Tanzania prepares to mark National Farmers’ Day (Nane Nane), which will be commemorated nationally in Dodoma, the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) has announced the issuance of affordable loans worth Sh1.129 trillion over the past ten years, aimed at economically empowering farmers.
Speaking to journalists in Dodoma today July 31, 2025 ahead of the exhibition, TADB Managing Director Mr Frank Nyabundege said the bank is committed to supporting the Government’s efforts to transform agriculture by uplifting smallholder farmers through accessible, low-interest credit.
“TADB continues to fulfil its core mandate of facilitating access to finance for farmers under friendly conditions. Our goal is to ensure agriculture becomes a profitable and sustainable business that contributes meaningfully to national development,” said Mr Nyabundege.
He added that this year’s exhibition will be exceptional, symbolising the significant progress achieved in the agriculture sector through the bank’s services to farmers across the country.
“When President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office, TADB’s capital stood at only Sh60 million. That figure has since risen dramatically to Sh442 million. Moreover, President Samia injected Sh1 trillion into the Bank of Tanzania, allowing it to lend to commercial banks at a favourable 3 percent interest rate. This move enabled farmers to access credit at interest rates below 10 percent—far lower than the previous 20 to 30 percent,” Mr Nyabundege explained.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Gerald Mweli, said this year’s exhibition has been greatly improved and is expected to provide essential knowledge to farmers and the public on technology, modern farming practices, and economic opportunities within the agriculture sector.
“Nane Nane is not merely an exhibition—it is a platform for education, training, and empowerment of our farmers. We welcome all stakeholders to participate,” said Mr Mweli.
This year’s Nane Nane exhibitions are scheduled to officially commence on 1 August, with the Guest of Honour being the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The exhibitions will bring together various stakeholders in the agriculture sector, including farmers, financial institutions, researchers, and input suppliers, with the aim of sharing knowledge and showcasing achievements driven by the sector’s ongoing transformation.
