Tanzania: Revenue authority says casual workers to start paying tax

TRA director of taxpayer education, Mr Richard Kayombo.
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has said that casual workers and those paid through commissions must register for the Taxpayers Identification Numbers to enable them start paying tax.
The TRA director of Taxpayer Education, Mr Richard Kayombo, told The Citizen over the weekend that the workers were supposed to start paying taxes from their January.
He stressed that for the government to be able to collect taxes there was need to put up a system that identifies all workers whether casual or permanent.
He said that the TIN mode of tax payment for casual workers has been stipulated in the Tax Administration Act 2015.
He added that before the enforcement of the Act companies were supposed to deduct the tax and remit it to TRA but some were not doing so.
"We discovered that some employers were deducting the money from employees but were not remitting it to TRA. But even for those employers who were remitting the money to TRA it was difficult to identify the individuals from whose salaries the money was being deducted,".
From now on casual workers would be able to access the authority’s website to see whether their taxes had been submitted.
