Veteran politician and advocate Nimrod Mkono dies in the US

Tanzanian veteran politician, advocate, and businessman, Nimrod Mkono, has died at the age of 79 in the US where he has been reportedly been receiving treatment.

The news of his death was confirmed on Tuesday  by his brother, Zadock Mkono.

The former Member of Parliament, born on August 18, 1943, traveled to Florida in the US in 2018 for treatment after developing Alzheimer's disease.

However, the cause of his death was not immediately made public.

Mkono was a member of the ruling CCM party and legislator for Musoma Rural constituency from 2000 to 2015, and later Butiama from 2015 to 2020.

He was also a practicing advocate at Mkono and Advocates.

Confirming the death of the politician, Zadock said he has communicated with the family members in the US and that the deceased's body will be transported to Tanzania for burial.

Due to developing health complications, Mkono did not contest to defend his seat in the 2020 elections.

Besides politics, Mkono was also a philanthropist who engaged in various developmental initiatives in the education and health sectors.
