The Taliss-IST swimming championships have been scheduled to take place on February 24 and 25, 2024 at Masaki’s International School of Tanganyika swimming pool in the city.

Speaking with The Citizen today on February 22, 2024, Taliss-IST manager Hadija Shebe named Kenya’s Braeburn Swim Club and Uganda’s Flash Swim Club, both of which will compete in the championships.

Shebe said the clubs are expected to arrive in Tanzania one day before the event, expressing that it is a milestone for their event to feature foreign clubs.

"It is history for a swimming event to be organised by a club and features swimmers from outside the country.  This shows how the event expands and continues to gain popularity in and outside Tanzania," said Hadija.

The contest will also feature swimmers from various clubs in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

Preparations for the event are top gear as it is expected to be thrilling and competitive under the sponsorship of Bwana Sukari, Pepsi, Travelport, Jubilee Insurance, Azam, Doctors Plaza, Burger 53, Swahili Sweat Shop and Dehli Darbaar.

According to Shebe, the event is one of the premium swimming galas that all the clubs look to feature in.

She said 18 clubs will compete in the event including Dar es Salaam Swim Club, Mis Piranhas from Morogoro, Lake Swim Club, Mwanza Swim Club, Pigec, Bluefins, LVSC, Riptide, Train2gain and French School.

Others are Zanzibar’s Wahoo, Flash Swim Club from Uganda, CRSC, FK Blue Marlins, Premier Swim Club and the hosts, Taliss-IST Swim Club.

She said all the swimmers are currently honing their skills ahead of the event as they  will compete in various disciplines according to age categories namely under-eight; 9 and 10; 11 and 12; 13 and 14; 15 and 16, 17 and over for both boys and girls.

“We are expecting to have a thrilling event due to the fact that all clubs from Mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya and Uganda will compete.

“This is the first and biggest swimming event in the country, whereby swimmers will gauge their skills after intensive training,” said Shebe.

The competitors will also battle it out for medals in five swimming styles, namely: backstroke, butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke, individual medley and relays.

“The event will have the country’s top-ranked swimmers, who will compete against other contestants,” she said, adding that it is aimed at promoting the sport in the country.

“The event is intended to keep the swimmers busy maintaining and even up-scaling their swimming standards,” said Hadija.

She explained that awards will be given to the first three winners of each age category in the event, which is expected to feature more than 200 swimmers.
