Star athletes to spice up Sokoine race

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s elite athletes, including Failuna Matanga, will compete in Sokoine Memorial Marathon in Arusha on Saturday.

Also on the list are Magdalena Shauri, Angelina Tsere, Sisilia Ginoka, Mayselina Mbua, Amina Mgoo, Anastazia Dolomongo, Aisha Magelani and Natalia Elisante, according to Athletics Tanzania (AT) executive committee member, Tullo Chambo.

The eagerly awaited race will start at the Arusha Declaration monument round about and end at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Chambo named the other runners for the race as Marko Monko, Joseph Panga, Faraja Damas, Emmanuel Giniki, Gabriel Geay, Yohana Elisante and Francis Damiano.

He said the race has been organised in honour of the late Prime Minister Edward Moringe Sokoine, who died in a car crash on April 12, 1984.

A special mass for the late PM and long serving lawmaker for Monduli, will be held on April 12 at Monduli Juu Village

Runners will compete in three categories; a 21-kilometre (half marathon), a two-kilometre run for the kids and ‘fun run’ for the rest, including the elderly.

According to the organisers, the event has been organised by Sokoine Memorial Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the late PM.

Arusha Athletics (AA) secretary general Alfredo Shahanga said the first such race was held at Monduli Juu in 2014.
