BFT to name team for Rio Olympic qualifiers

The qualifiers will determine the boxers who will take part in the forthcoming summer Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games to be held in August this year.

Dar es Salaam. The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) will next week announce national team players who will go to Olympic Qualifiers in Cameroon in March this year.

More than six coaches are currently scouting for best pugilists who will excel in the ongoing national boxing championship, which will climax tomorrow at Tanganyika Packers at Kawe in Dar es Salaam.

The coaches involved in the assessment are Godrey Akarory (Kinondoni), Said Omary ‘Gogopoa’ (Temeke), Benjamin Mwangata (JKT), David Yombayomba (Ngome), Remmy Ngabo (Magereza) and Mzonge Hassan (Ngome).

According to BFT secretary general, Makore Mashaga, the federation will pick up ten boxers, including three female for the Yaounde qualifiers.

Ngome, JKT, Magereza and Kigoma had their boxers qualified in the quarterfinals of national boxing championship after excelling at their yesterday’s respective assignments.

In the first bout, Heri Joshua of Msasani had to be rescued by referee from a heavy beating before Furahisha Omary of JKT was announced winner.

Sunday Elius of Ngome eliminated Omary Hasssan of Temeke in the second round .

Emmanuel Marwa of Magereza also beat Mintanga Kurwa of Msasani. The event will continue today in the semifinal before climaxing tomorrow.
