Dar es Salaam. The sixth edition of the NBC Dodoma Marathon is scheduled to take place on July 27 in the Dodoma Region.

This year’s event is expected to attract 12,000 runners, up from 8,000 participants last year, with registration now officially open.

NBC Bank’s Director of Finance, Rayson Foya, said that the marathon aims to raise Sh700 million to support the fight against cervical cancer and expand midwife sponsorship to reach 200 midwives.

Foya also explained that the funds will enable the launch of a new program to sponsor the education of 100 nurses who will provide care for children with autism in Tanzania.

The official launch of the event was attended by various stakeholders, including key sponsors such as GSM Group (main sponsors) and NBC Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Theobald Sabi.

Other partners include Sanlam Insurance, Vodacom Tanzania, Jubilee Allianz Insurance, Strategis Insurance, and GardaWorld. Foya explained that participants will compete in races of 5km, 10km, half marathon (21km), and full marathon (42km).

He added that they are proud of the significant impact achieved over the past five years, having raised Sh1 billion, with over 80 percent of the funds directed towards the fight against cervical cancer in collaboration with the Ocean Road Cancer Institute.

“We have managed to reach over 200,000 women, with more than 3,000 receiving treatment, and 80 women fully recovered and reunited with their families,” said Foya.

Additionally, 100 midwives have been sponsored in partnership with the Benjamin Mkapa Foundation to help reduce maternal and infant mortality.

“This year, we plan to expand the program to reach 200 midwives,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the event sponsors, Kyenekiki Kyando from Sanlam Insurance and Rukia Yazid from GSM Group said their involvement is driven by their commitment to the marathon’s cause and the organizers’ strong mission to save the lives of women and children through cervical cancer prevention and safe maternal healthcare.

On his part, Crispin Kahesa, director of preventive services at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute, thanked the marathon’s contributions over the past five years. Kahesa said the institute has reached approximately 200,000 women across 78 districts, and has empowered over 250 healthcare providers who continue to screen and treat patients with the disease.
