Dar es Salaam. Taifa Stars head coach Hemed Suleiman ‘Morocco’ praised his squad's discipline and tactical execution after their hard-fought 1-0 win over Mauritania in their second Group B match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Wednesday night at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The decisive moment came late, in the 89th minute, through a well-timed goal from right-back Shomari Kapombe. But for Morocco, the win was more than just about the scoreline.  “It was never going to be an easy game,” Morocco said after the final whistle. “Mauritania sat deep and played direct, but we had prepared for that. We made crucial substitutions and the players executed the plan with focus and belief.”

He highlighted the team’s growing tactical maturity, crediting the players for staying disciplined and sticking to the game plan under pressure.

“This wasn’t about individual flair—it was about structure, patience, and understanding the rhythm of the match. The boys remained calm and organized, and that’s what made the difference.” The coach also acknowledged the crucial role played by fans in pushing the team forward throughout a tense and physical encounter.  “Our fans gave us incredible energy. It was not a flawless performance, but the commitment and fight were there—and that’s what matters at this stage.” Despite the win, Morocco admitted that there is still work to be done, especially in terms of finishing.

“We’re creating chances, but we need to be more ruthless in front of goal. These games are decided by small margins, and we must take our chances when they come.” Looking ahead to their final group game against Madagascar, Morocco urged his players to stay grounded and focused.

“We’ve done well so far, but we’re not through yet. We must remain humble, stay sharp, and finish the job. There’s no room for complacency.”

He concluded by praising the collective spirit and mental resilience of the entire team.

“All the players fought hard today.

Everyone understood their role and gave everything. We trusted the system, we trusted each other—and that’s what is driving us forward.”
