Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga) leadership is in the final stages of contract negotiations with Zambian attacking midfielder Clatous Chama, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of next month.
Chama, who made a surprise switch from Yanga’s traditional rivals Simba SC at the start of the season, signed a one-year deal with the Jangwani Street giants.
Since joining, he has played a key role in their CAF Champions League campaign, making eight appearances and scoring two goals.
Rumours have been circulating that the Zambian international is considering a return to Simba, the club he first joined in the 2018/2019 season from Lusaka Dynamos.
However, a senior Yanga official, speaking to The Citizen on condition of anonymity, confirmed that negotiations are progressing positively.
“We are in the final stages of negotiations. While we have not yet signed a new contract, the discussions are going well, and we are on good terms,” the official said. “We expect to finalise the deal soon after his national team duty, as he is currently not in the country.”
The official stressed that Chama is a crucial member of the squad and the club is eager to retain his services.
“He is one of our key players, and we do not want to lose him. Following the sale of Stephane Aziz Ki to Wydad Athletic Club, we are carefully managing our squad, and Chama is part of our plans moving forward.”
He also hinted that more player transfers could take place in the coming weeks but declined to disclose names.
However, The Citizen has learned that young striker Clement Mzize and Kenyan midfielder Duke Abuya are attracting interest from other clubs across the continent.
Yanga is currently undergoing a strategic squad review as they prepare for next season's campaign, both domestically and in CAF competitions.
Keeping influential players like Chama is seen as essential for maintaining their competitive edge, especially after the departure of star performers like Aziz Ki.
With fans eager for clarity on Chama’s future, Yanga’s leadership hopes to finalise and announce the deal in the coming weeks, once the player completes his national team assignments.
