Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s football giants, Young Africans (Yanga), have been nominated for the prestigious Best Club of the Year award at the 2024 National Sports Council (NSC) Awards, set to take place at the Super Dome in Masaki on June 1.

Yanga's nomination follows an impressive 2023/24 season where they clinched two major domestic titles the Mainland Premier League and the CRDB Federation Cup.

The club displayed dominance throughout the season, earning widespread praise for their consistency, discipline, and tactical superiority.

Yanga will be up against Dar City, a basketball powerhouse that won the National Basketball League title in style.

The tight race between the two clubs showcases the growing competitiveness across different sporting disciplines in Tanzania.

In the national team category, the Taifa Stars (national senior men’s football team) have been shortlisted for the Best National Team of the Year award.

Their competition includes the national amateur boxing team and the national cricket team.

All three sides made notable strides in international competitions, with the Taifa Stars putting up brave performances in continental qualifiers.

The Best National Women’s Team award will be contested among the Twiga Stars (national women’s football team), the Under-16 women’s basketball team, and the national women’s cricket team.

All three teams recorded commendable achievements in their respective categories over the year.

In the individual categories, marathoner Alphonce Simbu leads the nominations for Best Sports Personality of the Year (Men), alongside professional boxer Fadhil Majiha and amateur boxer Yusuf Changarawe.

The women’s category features golf star Madina Idd, footballer Aisha Masaka, and professional boxer Rehema Abdallah.

In the women’s division, the shortlist features swimmer Filbertha Demello, basketball player Namnyaki Isaya, and cricketer Jenipher Gabriel — all standout performers in their age categories.

Referees will also be recognised, with the Best Referee (Women) award contested by Nasma Omary Kikaranga (basketball), Tatu Malogo (football), and Hellen Njau “Pendo” (professional boxing).

The men’s referee category includes football official Ahmed Arajiga, swimming’s Noel Kiunsi, and basketball referee Shaban Mohamed.

Meanwhile, the Best Coach of the Year category features football tactician Hemed “Morocco” Seleman and amateur boxing coach Samwel Kapungu — both credited for outstanding development and performance in their respective teams.
